BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Owls volleyball team took to the court one more time in 2019, as Bryn Mawr welcomed Ursinus to campus for a Senior Day tilt against the Bears. It was one of the best performances of the season for the Owls, as they gave Ursinus all they could handle, particularly in the final two sets of the contest. Senior captain Jess DeJoie capped off her career with a three-kill performance on the day for Bryn Mawr.
The Owls got out to a strong start in the opening set of the contest, as kills from Sydney Collins and Sydney Munnerlyn, sandwiched around a service error from the Bears, gave Bryn Mawr a 3-2 lead early. However, that advantage immediately slipped away, as Ursinus won the next 12 points in the set to take a commanding 14-3 lead. Collins and Jane Rand added two more kills for Bryn Mawr, and later Alanna Mora-Mickens added another, but that would not be enough to get the Owls back in the set. Ultimately, Ursinus won the opener by a score of 25-9, thanks in part to a 15/1 kill-to-error ratio in the set.
Things changed drastically over the next two sets, however. Bryn Mawr was able to keep things much closer throughout the second set, as the Owls increased their kill count while cutting back on their errors. Olivia Harkins-Finn and Mora-Mickens each tallied kills in the opening stretch for Bryn Mawr, giving the Owls a 9-8 advantage early on in the set. Later, after a couple more errors from the Bears and a kill by DeJoie, the Owls extended that lead to 12-9. Unfortunately for Bryn Mawr, Ursinus used a five-point run to vault back ahead, and over the rest of the set the Bears pulled away to a 25-19 win of the frame.
However, the Owls now knew that they could hang with Ursinus, and the third frame became even more competitive than the second. Ursinus took an early lead, but a five-point run for Bryn Mawr put the Owls in command early with a 9-5 lead. A kill from Rand later in the set helped Bryn Mawr remain in front 11-8. Later, Bryn Mawr won three consecutive points, capped off by a big kill from DeJoie, to take a 14-12 advantage. In fact, the Owls would lead as late as 16-15 in the set thanks to a kill from Collins. Unfortunately, that would be the final lead of the day for Bryn Mawr, as Ursinus won the next three points and then slowly pulled away to a 25-20 win in the set.
Today's result marks the end of the 2019 campaign for this Bryn Mawr team. The Owls will return to action next fall.
