BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr volleyball team was back in action for their first Centennial Conference home match of the season earlier Wednesday night, as the Owls welcomed Washington College to campus. Bryn Mawr gave it a good run on the night, posting some of their highest set scores they've had in recent matches. Nicole Wood led the team with nine kills and 11 digs on the night, while Sydney Collins added 12 assists.
Washington College got off to a strong start in set one, jumping out to a 16-2 lead early. A couple of errors and a kill by Wood later and the Owls had it back to 18-5, and then four straight errors from the Shorewomen made it even closer. Sydney Collins and Jess DeJoie tallied their first kills of the night later in the set, and Izzy Gerosa added a service ace as well. However, the Shorewomen were able to make the early lead stand up, as they won the opening frame 25-16.
The second set was a similar story to the first, as once again the visitors jumped out to a big advantage. Wood tallied another early kill, but the Owls couldn't get much else going as Washington College took a 17-5 lead. Another kill from Wood helped spark a nice run from Bryn Mawr there, and she would add another one later to help the Owls climb within 20-11. The Shorewomen closed out the set by winning the next five points, taking a 2-0 lead into frame three.
The third set would be where the Owls made the most noise on the night, but once again, they had to respond to a Washington College lead. A service ace gave the Shorewomen an 8-1 lead, but then a few errors gave Bryn Mawr a chance to chip away. Wood added a kill off a nice feed from Collins, and that sparked a run that brought Bryn Mawr back within 10-6. Later, Sydney Munnerlyn came up with her first kill of the night, and then two kills from Wood got Bryn Mawr back within three at 14-11. Collins answered a Washington College kill with a kill of her own to keep the deficit at three, but then the Shorewomen began to pull away. DeJoie, Wood, and Olivia Harkins-Finn each tallied another kill late in the set, but Washington College ultimately sealed the deal with a 25-18 win of the set.
The Owls will be right back in action on Saturday with a non-conference test against Gwynedd Mercy. Gametime for Saturday's Homecoming match is slated for 12:00 PM in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium.
