SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr volleyball team was back on the court earlier Wednesday night, as the Owls traveled down to Tri-Co rival Swarthmore for another Centennial Conference match. Bryn Mawr put up a good effort on the night but ran into a buzzsaw in the form of a potent Swarthmore attack. The Garnet racked up 33 kills on the night at a .356 hitting percentage, making it tough for the Owls to match pace. Nicole Wood led the Owls with five kills on the night while Jane Rand added six assists.
The night got off to a smooth start, as Wood tallied a kill right off the bat for the Owls to give them a 1-0 lead in the first set. However, Swarthmore immediately responded with an 11-point run to take a commanding lead. Several errors and a kill from Sydney Collins later and the Owls had climbed back within 14-5. Then, back-to-back kills from Jess DeJoie and Sydney Munnerlyn brought Bryn Mawr within eight, but Swarthmore won the final six points of the frame to take the first set 25-7.
The second set was much closer in the early going. DeJoie racked up a kill early on to tie the set at 1-1. Then, Nicole Wood bagged two more kills and Munnerlyn added a third, bringing the Owls with 5-9. Unfortunately for the Owls, Swarthmore won 15 of the next 17 points to take a commanding 24-7 lead. The Owls were able to stave off the loss momentarily thanks to a pair of errors from the Garnet, but the hosts finally claimed a 25-9 win with one final kill.
In the third frame, the Garnet once again got off to a hot start, taking a 12-3 lead out of the gate. Nicole Wood and Casandra Paiz each tallied aces in the middle part of the set to help the Owls' cause, and later Collins and Wood each added kills. However, it wasn't enough to match Swarthmore's offensive output, and the Garnet clinched the match with a 25-11 win of the set.
Bryn Mawr will be back in action a week from tonight as they hit the road once more. The Owls will travel to Lancaster for a matchup against Franklin & Marshall on the 23rd, with gametime set for 7:00 PM.
