Volleyball Faces Off Against McDaniel

Casandra Paiz serves against Gwynedd Mercy fall 2019

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Owls welcomed McDaniel College to the Class of 1958 Gymnasium earlier Saturday afternoon for another Centennial Conference matchup. Bryn Mawr battled hard throughout the day, improving in each set they played against the Green Terror. However, Bryn Mawr was unable to come away with a win on the day as McDaniel took the victory in 3-0 fashion. Nicole Wood led the Owls with six kills in the match, while Jane Rand added three more in her return from injury for Bryn Mawr.

The Owls got the day off to a strong start, as a McDaniel attack error and a kill from Wood gave the hosts a 2-0 lead in the first set. However, a quick run from the Green Terror gave the visitors an 11-4 advantage midway through the set. Several more McDaniel errors and another kill from Wood helped Bryn Mawr try and chip away, but ultimately the Green Terror were able to pull away to a 25-9 win on the day.

In the second set, Bryn Mawr got off to a similarly quick start. Two errors from the Green Terror gave Bryn Mawr the serve, and that led to back-to-back service aces from Casandra Paiz. However, McDaniel responded with a strong run of their own to take a 6-4 lead. More errors kept the Owls in the set, and another kill from Wood pulled Bryn Mawr back within 12-9 midway through the frame. However, McDaniel ran of seven straight points to extend their lead to 19-9. Rand posted two kills to stop the bleeding for the Owls, and Jess DeJoie added another later in the set, but McDaniel ultimately pulled away and closed out the set 25-13.

For the third time on the day, Bryn Mawr opened the third set with a lead, as Nicole Wood got things started with a bang with her fourth kill of the day. McDaniel answered right back, but errors from the visitors kept it a 4-4 game. From there, the visitors jumped out to an 11-5 advantage, but Bryn Mawr wasn't done yet. Sydney Collins blasted home a kill, and then Wood posted two more before Collins served up an ace. That all combined to help Bryn Mawr pull within three at 13-10. Later on in the set, with the Owls trailing 19-10, Bryn Mawr battled back one more time, keeping several balls alive after vicious McDaniel attack attemps and ultimately forcing the visitors into four straight errors. However, that would be all the noise that Bryn Mawr could make, as the Green Terror won six straight points to close out the set and claim the 3-0 win.

The Owls will be right back in action on Monday night with another home Centennial Conference match on the agenda. Gametime on Monday night is slated for 7:00 PM, when the Owls will welcome Dickinson College to campus for a league tilt.
