Volleyball Gives Haverford Battle in Wednesday Night Showdown

Jane Rand September 2018

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr volleyball team made the short trip across town to take on Haverford earlier Wednesday night, with the Owls putting on a very strong effort against the Fords. Bryn Mawr gave the hosts a fight in all three sets, but came up just short in each. Nicole Wood posted 16 digs to lead the Owls in a strong defensive performance, while Jessie Zong led the way with six kills on the night. Haverford was led by a seven-kill performance from Dina Kosyagin.

The Owls got off to a fast start in the opening set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead thanks to three kills from Zong and another from Wood, all of which came from great assists by Jane Rand. However, the Fords quickly bounced back from that rough start, and over the next dozen or so points, took a 9-7 lead. The Owls did not relent, fighting their way back into the set thanks in part to another kill from Zong and two kills and an ace by Camille Baechler, which gave Bryn Mawr a 12-11 lead. A 5-0 run from the Fords put the hosts back on top, and they slowly extended their lead out to 20-17. A kill from Baechler got Bryn Mawr back within two before Haverford racked up two more points. Once again, Baechler threw down a thundering kill to get the Owls closer, but Haverford managed to win the final two points and close out a 25-19 win of the set.

The second frame started in much different fashion for the Owls, as Haverford used a 5-0 run out of the gate to vault ahead 11-4 in the early part of the set. Bryn Mawr stopped the bleeding with three straight points of their own, sparked by a huge block from Baechler and Sienna Burnett. However, a six-point run put Haverford ahead 17-7, and Bryn Mawr's attack couldn't dig the Owls out of the hole. The Owls registered just one kill in the second set, and although plenty of Haverford errors got Bryn Mawr back within seven late, it wasn't enough to give the visitors much of a chance in a 25-17 loss in the second set.

Bryn Mawr rebounded nicely in the opening part of the third set, using a 5-0 run of their own to claim a 10-7 advantage. The first nine points of that stretch came as errors from the Fords, with Baechler capping off the run with a big service ace. Haverford rallied with a big run of their own, as a block from the Fords sparked a 6-0 run that put the hosts up 13-10. Bryn Mawr won the next two points, the second coming on a service ace from Jocelyn Bravo, to get back within one. Later, as Haverford began to extend their lead a bit, Zong, Wood, and Rand each tallied kills to keep things close at 15-18. However, the Fords were simply too powerful in the final set, using a match-high 15 kills in the frame to claim a 25-21 win and seal the 3-0 victory on the night.

The Owls will be right back in action on Saturday to close out their 2018 campaign. Bryn Mawr will take on Ursinus on the road this weekend, with gametime on Saturday slated for 1:00 PM.
