Owls Keep Their Hot Streak Going at WCU Invitational

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr track & field team got back in action earlier Saturday at the WCU Invitational, hosted by West Chester University. The Owls had plenty of great performances on the day, including another new school record in throws!

The highlight of the day for the Owls came in the hammer throw, where both Natalia Phillip and Halena Martin surpassed the previous school record. Throwing first, Phillip shattered the previous best with a throw of 28.68 meters. Then, fellow first-year Martin stepped up a few moments later and threw down a new record on top of that, throwing a long of 29.15 meters. Not only is that a new school record for Martin, but she also becomes the first woman in Bryn Mawr history to qualify for the Centennial Conference Championship meet in all four throwing events. Both Martin and Phillip had also already set collegiate personal records in the discus throw, with Martin setting a collegiate PR in the javelin in the afternoon as well.

Over on the track, the Owls debuted a strong 4x100 meter relay team. The quartet consisted of Mecca Harris, Tahawney Terrell, Rachel Greene, and Tara Holman. Those four took the top spot in their heat, and their time of 52.81 was the fastest Owls time since the 2015 Centennial Conference Championships. Harris also had a strong showing in the shot put today, improving on her CC qualifying mark with a long of 8.95 meters.

In the 100 meter dash, Katie Billings had a season best time of 14.05 seconds. There were a pair of strong performances in the 400 meter, where Tahawney Terrell set a new personal record time of 1:04.08. Cailey Klink finished not far behind Terrell, coming home in a time of 1:04.56 for a new collegiate PR.

The Owls also stayed hot in the mid-distance events, where Kate Edwards (5:04.13), Anna Kyle (5:11.78), and Nina Inman (5:40.97) all set new personal records in the 1500 meter. Ashley Macina posted a season-best time in the 800 meter with a run of 2:33.15, while Vidya Ramaswamy continued to improve in that event with a new personal record time of 2:54.77.

In the long jump, Rachel Greene posted a new season-best with a long of 4.79 meters. Noor Banihashem Ahmad threw down a very solid mark in triple jump with a long of 9.69 meters. Rachel Greene set her season best in LJ and Noor Banihashem Ahmad put up her best non-wind aided mark of the season in TJ.

The day came to a close with two really exciting performances in the 5k. Hot off her win at the last weekend's meet, Campbell Powell was looking to drop time at the distance, while Chelsea Thangavelu was testing the waters in her first 5k of the season. Thangavelu went on to run 20:06 for a new personal record, while Powell was able to drop over 20s from last week for a new personal record herself.

The Owls will have a busy week next week, as they take part in the Gwynedd Mercy Mid-Week Twilight Invitational on Wednesday before traveling to Moravian College on the weekend for a two-day event there.

The team was supported by Prof. Tim Harte and family, the Billings, the Martins, the Edwards, extended members of the Kyle family, and multiple significant others. Many thanks to all who made it out to WCU and to those who supported us from afar. - Coach Hewitt
