WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The 2014 outdoor track and field season got under way Saturday afternoon as the Owls traveled to nearby West Chester University for the annual running of the Golden Ram Invite.
Sophomore Yue Yang led the Owls with a stellar performance in the 800m. Seeded in a strong heat that pushed hard in the opening lap, Yang saw herself with a 5m deficit in the final 150m. However, Yang surged the front of the pack in the last 100m to earn her first heat win of her career. With the late surge, Yang set a new personal best time in the event with 2:42.49 and finished 16th overall in a field of 32.
Also in the 800m, freshman Adriana Castilla Hernandez posted a persona best time with a 3:05.41.
Freshman Jing Ma leaped to a seventh place finish in the long jump with a leap of 3.77m while sophomore Hannah Hastings finished second in the steeplechase with a time of 12:21.60 as she qualified for Conferences.
The throwers had a strong showing in their first outdoor meet of the season. Freshman Gwendolyn Vary and sophomore Margaret Patchin started the day at discus and posted distances of 20.92m and 14.88m, respectively. At javelin, Vary led the Owls with a heave of 14.72m followed by Patchin (11.60m), sophomore Marissa Mirecki (11.60m) and sophomore Rebecca Craig (10.96m). All four throws in the javelin were all personal best distances.
The 4x400m team of Yang, Ma, freshman Carissa Yao and Mirecki Edged topped Alfred State with a time of 5:00.54.
Bryn Mawr will be back to action next weekend as they travel to Widener University for the Danny Curran Invite on March 28 & 29.
