WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The 2013 outdoor track and field season got off on a fast note as the Owls dominated the 5k run at the WCU Golden Ram Innovational Saturday.
The team's first race of the season was the best for the Yellow and White all day. With six runners entered in the 5k, the tandem of senior Kristina Kronauer and sophomore Claudia Keep took home 1-2. Kronauer's time of 17:41.33 set a new school record which was previously held by Keep (17:42.14). Keep posted an 18:03.05 while freshman Hannah Hastings (19:46.18) and sophomore Kim Wiley (19:55.78) posted top-ten finishes, 8th and 9th, respectively. Hastings time is also a Centennial Conference Championship qualifying time. Other notable finishes for the Owls included junior Victoria Travis (21:22.03, 21st place) and sophomore Elaine Schmidt (21:40.48, 22nd place).
In the 4x100m team of freshman Alex Beda, sophomore Tonja Nixon, senior Rachel Shen and sophomore Tehzeeb Tyebjee sprinted to a 56.93. Nixon doubled back in the 100m to qualify for conferences with a time of 14.24 while Beda qualified in the 400m (1:06.85).
In the high jump, freshman Helena Van Oudenallen cleared 1.37m and qualified her for the year-end conference championships.
The Owls are back to action in two weeks when they travel to Muhlenberg College for the annual Muhlenberg Invitational on Saturday, April 6.
