LINCOLN, Neb. – Junior Claudia Keep closed out the 2014 indoor track and field season Friday evening as she set a new school record in the 5K at the NCAA DIII National Championships hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan College.
Entering the national event seeded 14th in a field of 17, Keep improved not only her time, but her national rank. She crossed the finish line with a time of 17:19.97, good for 10th place. Her time was more than three seconds off her previous school mark, 17:23.17, set earlier this season at the Haverford Holiday Meet.
"I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to race at the national meet, alongside so many talented athletes," stated Keep. "In the 5K, everything my coach and I have been working on all season came together and a personal best was a perfect end to the indoor season."
Keep came up two spots and 12-seconds short on All-America honors. To earn All-America status in track and field, you must finish in the top 8 of your respected event.
The race winner, Kenore Moreno of La Verna set a new NCAA DIII meet record of 16:32.85. The previous mark was held by Melissa White of SUNY Geneseo, 16:39.16.
"Claudia's had a great season and this evening was the icing on the cake," said head coach Jason Hewitt.
The NCAA DIII Indoor Track & Field National Championship is the final event for the indoor season. The Owls kick-off the outdoor reason on Saturday, March 22, at the Golden Ram invitational hosted by West Chester University.
