BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr tennis team kicked off their fall season earlier Friday afternoon, and the Owls got their 2018-19 campaign off to a fantastic start. Despite starting the match two points down due to being short a player on a study abroad semester, Bryn Mawr won six of the seven matches that were actually played to ultimately claim an impressive 6-3 victory over Immaculata.
The Owls' first-years came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, as the three freshman players combined to win every match they played. The action started in doubles, where first-year Audrey Camacho paired up with Caroline Horvatits. That duo played well right from the start, never losing a game en route to an 8-0 blanking of their opponents at second doubles. At first doubles, the story was little different. Sisters Amalia and Mia Parrish got their collegiate careers rolling with an impressive 8-2 victory at the top spot. Those wins helped Bryn Mawr basically even the overall match up at 2-2.
Bryn Mawr's hot start carried over into singles as well, where the Owls won four of the five matches in action. Christina Xue put on a strong showing at the fifth spot to give Bryn Mawr their first singles win of the season in 6-0, 6-2 fashion. Camacho continued her impressive debut, taking a 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles, ultimately not losing a single game on her opening day. Mia Parrish also blanked her opponent at third singles, with her 6-0, 6-0 win proving to be the decisive match of Bryn Mawr's win. The Owls got one more win at the top singles spot. Amalia Parrish won her first set with ease, but then fell behind slightly in the second set. However, she closed out the frame winning three straight games, ultimately earning the point with a 6-0, 6-4 win. Horvatits put on a strong showing herself at fourth singles, but ultimately lost a tough 6-2, 6-2 decision.
With the win, Bryn Mawr opens their season 1-0. The Owls will be right back in action next week, as they will play host to Division II opponent Shippensburg. Match time against the Raiders is set for 4:00 PM on Wednesday the 26th on the Bryn Mawr tennis courts.
