HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr tennis team made the short trip over to Haverford earlier Wednesday afternoon to face off against their Bi-Co rivals in a big Centennial Conference contest. The Owls played some very strong tennis throughout the day, but ultimately it was the Fords who protected their home court and took away the 9-0 win.
Lizzie Siegle and Mariam Haider paired up at the top doubles spot and put on a solid performance to lead the Owls out of the gate. The senior duo played great tennis throughout their match, giving their opponents trouble most of the way through their contest. Haider and Siegle each hit some very impressive shots at times to win some big points over their opponents. In fact, the Owls top pair held a 5-4 lead midway through their match thanks to some very solid play. However, it was the Fords duo who would ultimately win the match, winning the next four games and taking an 8-5 victory at that top spot. Haverford also earned wins at second and third doubles as well, both in 8-2 fashion, as the duos of Laske/Xue and Caramazza/Brewster each played solidly, but were unable to overcome the Fords' pairings.
In singles, the Owls each put on great efforts, but were simply unable to overcome strong play from the entire Haverford lineup. Bryn Mawr lost in straight sets at the top five singles positions, but Abbygail Brewster put up a fantastic battle at the sixth spot. The senior was absolutely dominant in her first set, throttling her Fords opponent with a 6-1 win in the frame. Brewster fought through to win long rallies and hit some well-placed shots to move her opponent around the court and cause problems, ultimately claiming the first set easily. Then in the second set, Brewster continued to play some tremendous tennis, but her Haverford opponent slowly started to claw her way back into the match. Ultimately, the Fords player managed to go the distance and win the second set 7-5, forcing a third set tiebreaker. Brewster continued to battle hard, but in the end the Owls senior came up just a fraction short, losing the breaker 10-7 to give Haverford the final win of the day in their 9-0 victory.
Bryn Mawr will be back in action this weekend, as they return home to face off against McDaniel. The Owls have had some great success against the Green Terror in recent years, and they'll look to continue that trend when the two teams face off this Saturday at 12:00 PM on the Bryn Mawr tennis courts.
