BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr tennis team put on a clinic earlier Saturday afternoon. The Owls celebrated Senior Day in style with a 9-0 win over McDaniel, their first conference win of the season so far. Eight players got in on the action, and each of them put together solid matches en route to the clean sweep of their league rivals.
Senior captain Kendall Baller paired up with Mariam Haider to get the Owls on the board first at 2nd doubles. The duo used sharp serving and great net play to earn a clean 8-2 win over their Green Terror opponents. Fellow senior captain Melina Koukoutchos promptly followed suit in her match. Koukoutchos teamed with Lizzie Siegle for yet another impressive performance at 1st singles, putting together an 8-2 win of their own. The seniors made it 3-for-3 in doubles just a few minutes later, thanks to strong play from senior captain Molly MacDougall at 3rd doubles. MacDougall, the vocal leader of the squad, paired up with Abbygail Brewster, and they were able to fight off a late comeback attempt from their McDaniel opponents to win the last game easily and take an 8-4 victory.
The Owls' success continued throughout singles as well. Em Prozinski and Lizzie Siegle each displayed some tremendous skill in their matches. They both made very few unforced errors and were able to control their matches from wire to wire, each posting 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Those results clinched the match in favor of the hosts, but the Owls wanted more, as they were in search of their first 9-0 win of the season. They would get it thanks to solid play all-around in the final four matches. Rosa Nanasi Haas was next to get a victory, as she held on for a strong 6-2, 6-3 win at sixth singles. Baller continued her solid day at the third spot, giving up just two games in each set as she completed a 6-2, 6-2 win. Haider was next to get a W, showing off her athleticism by getting to some well-placed shots by her opponent, and then capitalizing with some tremendous shots herself. Haider would keep the ball rolling with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the fourth spot. That fittingly left the final result on the shoulders of captain Koukoutchos. The senior played one of her strongest matches of the season at the top spot, winning the opening set by a 6-1 score. Winsome Schauer proved to be a pesky opponent throughout the contest, playing some great shots at the net and using a strong serve to look for a foothold. However, Koukoutchos closed the door with authority, completing the win in 6-3 fashion in the second set to seal the Owls' 9-0 victory.
Despite celebrating senior day today, the Owls seniors and the rest of the team will get a couple more cracks at action next week. Bryn Mawr has two more matches remaining, both at home starting with a 4:00 PM contest against Muhlenberg on Tuesday afternoon. The Owls will then be straight back out on the court on Wednesday for a final match against Ursinus College, also at 4:00 PM.
