Tennis Downs Smith on Final Day of Seven Sisters Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Bryn Mawr College tennis team split their matches on the final day of the 2013 Seven Sisters Championships hosted by Vassar College. The Owls ended the weekend with a 1-3 record while the host Brewers won by posting a perfect 4-0 record.

The Owls opened the day by defeating Smith 4-1. In doubles play, the top tandem of freshman Kendall Baller and junior Vivien Chen rolled to a 6-3, 6-4, win over Kyle Gouchoe-Hanas and Andrea Tanco. The lone loss of the match came in the No. doubles spot as freshman Tirsa Delate and sophomore Rachel Genovese fell to Carly Mellio and Tessy Lopez in a hard fought match 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

In singles play, junior Jenny Vogel shutout Seema Samawi from the No.1 spot 6-0, 6-0, while classmate Catherine Austin downed Gouchoe-Hanas by the same score in the third position. From the No. 2 spot, freshman Melina Koukoutchos surrendered two points in the whole match, both in the first set, before rolling to a 6-2, 6-0, win.

The 4-1 win is the first victory for the Owls in Seven Sisters competition since they defeated the Pioneers 3-2 back in the 2008-2009 season.

The weekend ended as the Owls fell to Wellesley 5-0. In doubles, Baller and Chen fell to Suzanne Barth and Veronica Lin 6-1, 6-2. At the No. 2 spot, the duo Delate and Genovese were defeated by Sojung Lee and Elena Bowenthen 6-2, 6-0. 

In singles, The Blue recorded three straight set wins to take the match, 5-0. At No. 1, Vogel fell to Diana Granger 6-3, 6-0, while Koukoutchos lost 6-1, 6-0, to Catherine Matulis in the second slot. From the third spot, Austin was defeated by Kendall Tada 6-0, 6-1.

The Owls are back to action right away as they travel to Muhlenberg for a 4:00 pm match with the Mules on Monday, April 15.
