BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr soccer team made a little history earlier Saturday afternoon, as the Owls thumped Ursinus 3-0 on Applebee Field in the final contest of the 2019 campaign. The win is Bryn Mawr soccer's first recorded victory over the Bears in program history, and it is also the first Centennial Conference win for Bryn Mawr since the 2015 season. Laura Burckhardt got the scoring started for the Owls, while senior Catherine Bactat capped off the day in perfect fashion, tallying her first career goal on Senior Day to help send Bryn Mawr's senior class out in style.
The Owls had the better of the offensive chances throughout today's contest, but both sides did well to get shots off on the day. The problem for the Bears is that Bryn Mawr's defense did a superb job of limiting their shots to coming from well outside the penalty box or from bad angles. On the other side, the Owls did a great job of creating chances that were truly dangerous, and the Bryn Mawr pressure finally paid off in the 40th minute of play. It was Laura Burckhardt who would get the Owls on the board in the contest, receiving a pass at the top right of the penalty box and faking to her left before driving a right-footed shot between the Ursinus goalkeeper and the near post to put the Owls up 1-0 just before halftime.
The offensive explosion would continue in the second half for Bryn Mawr, as Anna Miller tallied her first career goal as an Owl. Miller made a fantastic individual effort on the play, intercepting a pass in front of the Ursinus bench and cutting in towards the middle of the field. While still about five yards above the center of the penalty box, Miller fired a perfectly weighted shot that curled over the Ursinus goalkeeper and into the netting to double the Bryn Mawr lead.
Of course, a senior day game wouldn't be truly complete without a goal from a senior, and Catherine Bactat would provide that shining moment less than two minutes after Miller's goal. On a free kick, the Owls drove the ball to the top of the box, where Hummel headed in towards the front of the goal. Burckhardt was there right at the top of the goal box, and she sent another header on goal, but the Bears' keeper made a fantastic reaction save with her right palm to prevent the ball from going in the back of the net. However, Bactat was the first to run on to the loose ball, and she was able to get enough on the shot to put it into the back of the netting before any nearby defenders could stop her. The goal, the first of Bactat's career, came fittingly in her final game as an Owl.
With the win, Bryn Mawr picks up a Centennial Conference win for the first time in four years. Bryn Mawr will be back in action in the fall of 2020.
