Wojcik Pours In Two Goals Against Swarthmore

Kass Wojcik fall 2019

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr soccer team traveled down 476 to face off against their Tri-Co rivals Swarthmore earlier on a rainy Tuesday night. It was a banner offensive night for Kass Wojcik, as the sophomore tallied two goals for the Owls. That marks the most goals Bryn Mawr has scored against Swarthmore since 2006. Unfortunately for Bryn Mawr, the Garnet offense proved even more potent, as the hosts scored five goals to pull away to a 5-2 win on the night. Carlie Hansen made a career high 13 saves in the contest for the Owls.

Swarthmore was on the front foot early, as the hosts tallied the opening goal just 90 seconds into the contest. Hansen made two strong saves to open the game, but the second stop led to a rebound that went straight to the Garnet's Grace Taylor. She finished into the back of the net to give the Garnet a 1-0 lead. Then, seven minutes later, Swarthmore would double their advantage thanks to a goal from Eleonore Moser.

However, Bryn Mawr did not let the early deficit get them down. The Owls would get right back in the game just six minutes after that second goal thanks to some sustained pressure in the offensive zone. The Owls were able to break out of their own defensive third after forcing a turnover, with Wojcik streaming down the middle of the field on a counterattack. Wojcik was able to get the ball to Paige Mastripolito down the right wing, and the first-year forward carried the ball all the way into the penalty box. With Swarthmore defenders streaming back to try and get in the play, Mastripolito cut back and sent a square pass directly to the middle of the penalty box where Wojcik was waiting. Wojcik received and squared up to the net before firing a low hard shot into the right side of the goal to get the Owls on the board.

Unfortunately for the Owls, the momentum from that goal did not last long, as Swarthmore scored again less than a minute-and-a-half after Wojcik's strike. That would close out the early flurry of scoring in the half and send the Garnet to halftime with a 3-1 lead. In the second half, Swarthmore once again got a pair of early goals to extend their lead even further.

Bryn Mawr had one more goal in them before the night was through, and it came off the foot of Wojcik once more. Working out of their own end on a punt from Hansen, a great through pass down the left side found Laura Burckhardt in the left corner of the attacking third. The first-year squared up towards the penalty box, made a nice cut around a Swarthmore defender, and then fired a great cross all the way across the face of the goal. Wojcik ran onto the pass on the right side of the penalty box and one-timed a rocket of a shot inside the right side of the goal to give Bryn Mawr their second and final goal of the game.

The Owls will be back on the road on Saturday with a trip to Franklin & Marshall on the schedule. Gametime in Lancaster is slated for 3:00 PM against the Diplomats.
