Soccer Takes Tough Loss At Haverford

Leah Baer September 2018

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr soccer team kicked off their final week of the 2018 season earlier Wednesday afternoon with a trip over to Bi-Co rival Haverford. Despite a solid all-around effort from the Owls, especially on the defensive and goalkeeping front, Haverford was able to break through enough to pull away with a 7-0 victory. Goalkeepers Leah Baer and Carlie Hansen combined to make 11 saves on the day in a strong performance. Seven different players scored for the Fords, with Leanne Ludwick netting the game-winner.

Haverford controlled possession in the opening minutes of play, but Bryn Mawr's defensive gameplan was solid. The Owls did a great job of limiting the Fords to low-quality chances, and the ones that did get through, Baer was there to stop them. The senior goalkeeper came up with three big saves in the opening 15 minutes of play to keep the game scoreless, and that allowed the Owls to probe for an offensive chance of their own. They would get that very opportunity in the 18th minute. After a foul on the Fords, Bryn Mawr worked the ball up the field on the counterattack, and ultimately they were able to get it on the foot of Sarah Coufal. The first-year winger got a great look at the net, but Fords goalkeeper Hannah Friedrich was able to make a save and preserve the shutout.

Unfortunately, that would be the lone offensive chance of the game for the Owls. Haverford broke through several minutes later on Ludwick's goal, and then the floodgates opened for five more goals in the half. Haverford added one more insurance goal in the second half, ultimately claiming their 7-0 win.

Bryn Mawr will be right back in action on Saturday for their final game of the season. The Owls will travel over to Collegeville for a faceoff against Ursinus, with gametime against the Bears slated for 3:00 PM.
