BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr soccer team was back in action earlier Tuesday afternoon with a fall break contest against Swarthmore. The Owls put up a solid fight for 90 minutes against the Garnet, but ultimately took a tough 7-0 loss in the game. Leah Baer and Carlie Hansen teamed up for 12 saves in goal for the Owls, who also tallied four shots in the game. Marin McCoy led the Garnet with two goals in the contest, including the game-winner.
McCoy was able to put the visitors on top with a goal just 3:55 into the contest, blasting home a lofted ball from the right side at the penalty spot. Swarthmore would double their lead less than ten minutes later, and then McCoy got her ninth of the season seven minutes after that on a free kick. All in all, the Garnet would score twice more in the first half and two more times in the second to claim their seven goals.
Bryn Mawr had few chances during the game, instead opting to play a strong defensive shell and then look for breakout opportunities. They did a great job picking their times to press and forcing plenty of Swarthmore turnovers, and the Owls got several chances on those opportunities. Elizabeth Kiely had a shot go wide in the first half, and Gwen Vandivere had a shot from low on the right side saved by the Swarthmore goalkeeper. However, Bryn Mawr's best chance of the game came in the 73rd minute. On a counterattacking opportunity, Bryn Mawr worked the ball down the field and into the right corner, where Bryn Mawr's wing player found herself in a little bit of space. She fired a cross into the box, and Sarah Coufal fired a shot from the left side of the penalty area. Her effort was saved, but the ball rebounded dangerously to the top of the box and right to the feet of Emily Elmore. However, Bryn Mawr's dangerous midfielder just barely mishit her attempt firing the ball high over the crossbar.
The Owls will be right back in action this Saturday for their final home contest of the season. Bryn Mawr will celebrate Senior Day by taking on Franklin & Marshall on Applebee Field on the 20th, with gametime slated for 2:00 PM.
