BRYN MAWR, Pa. – It took an extra 11-minutes to decide the winner of Friday's Bryn Mawr-Cairn showdown as the visiting Highlanders left the Main Line with the 1-0 win.
For the opening 90-minutes of Bryn Mawr's NCAA DIII match-up with Cairn, the Owls controlled the tempo of the game. Spending most of the time in their offensive side of the field, the Owls peppered the Highlander's goalie, Naomi Collipp with 21 shots in regulation. Despite the constant attack, the Owls were unable to capitalize and break the 0-0 tie.
After battling in the opening overtime period, the game stayed knotted at 0-0. However, in the opening minute of the second overtime and deep in their defensive side of the field, Cairn cleared the ball with Kathleen Meacham gaining possession at midfield. After sprinting to the goal with the ball for the one-on-one, Meacham's shot went past sophomore goalie Aviva Kosansky as she came sliding out to defend the break away.
For Bryn Mawr, freshman Mary-Kate Afzali and junior Marcela Dorfsman-Hopkins each took five shots. Freshman Madeleine Mark and junior Marian Slocum added four shot a piece while Kosansky posted three saves in the net.
The Yellow and White outshot the Highlanders 25-7 and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The win is the first time in series history that Cairn has beaten the Owls. Bryn Mawr entered today's game riding an 11-game win streak.
The Owls are back to action when they travel to Cabrini on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
