BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr College soccer team kicked-off their 2013 season by defeating Emory & Henry 1-0 Saturday afternoon on Applebee Field.
The entire first-half was back-and-forth with both teams having different opportunities to net the first goal of the game. Bryn Mawr's opportunity can in the 20th minute as Junior Marcela Dorfsman-Hopkins's shot rolled along the end line before a Wasp defender cleared the ball to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
With an even attack throughout the first-half as Bryn Mawr held a slight 7-6 edge in shots, both teams played hard with a majority of the play coming in the midfield.
Following halftime, it took Bryn Mawr only 15 minutes to take the lead. Following a foul on E&H and junior Marian Slocum stepping-up to take the free kick, you could feel the anxiety on the Owls bench to put the ball in the back of the net.
As Slocum approach the ball, she planted her foot and sent the shot to the far side of the net over the head of an outstretched Sarah Jerome. As the ball came to a rest in the back of the net, the Bryn Mawr bench and fans erupted knowing that one goal could be the difference.
As the half played on, Bryn Mawr outshot Emory & Henry 2-1 and as they time expired, the Owls won their 5th season opener since head coach Erin DeMarco took over the program eight years ago.
Senior goalie Valentina Viertel posted five saves en route to her career shutout. Sophomore transfer Alice Bell led the Owls with three shots while classmate Veronica Roux took two. Nine different Owls took shots on the afternoon.
The Owls are back to action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 1, when they play host to Goucher College at 1:00 pm.
