Owls Battle Nationally-Ranked Diplomats in Tough Home Loss

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr lacrosse team took on a tough opponent earlier Wednesday afternoon on Applebee Field. The Owls faced off against Franklin & Marshall, the fifth-ranked team in all of Division III according to the IWLCA. The Diplomats certainly proved the merit of that ranking with today's result, as they were able to flex some offensive muscle en route to a 17-1 win over the Owls. There were some bright spots for Bryn Mawr however, as they tallied a goal of their own just before halftime to break a 150-minute scoreless drought against the Diplomats dating back to 2013.

Franklin & Marshall (10-1, 3-0 CC) got off to a quick start in the contest, scoring their first goal just over a minute into the contest. Centennial Conference scoring leader Paige Moriarty tallied what would be the game-winner less than two minutes later, and that sparked the Diplomats to score eight more goals in the first half en route to a 10-0 lead.

The Owls (4-5, 0-4 CC) were determined to break through with some offense of their own, however, and finally put up a number with less than two minutes to play. Katie Alpert, who made some really spectacular saves in the contest, was able to collect a ground ball in the back and made a pass that started a great breakout for the Owls. Ultimately, the ball ended up on the stick of Fiona Steele, who was able to use her speed and make a great run down the field and through the middle of the Diplomats' defense. She then fired a low shot past F&M goalie Danielle Harrington and into the cage to give Bryn Mawr their lone goal of the game.

Franklin & Marshall would tally seven times in the second half to close out the game with the 17-1 win. Moriarty, Gabby Frank, and Grace Saliba each tallied three goals to lead the visitors to the win.

Bryn Mawr will try to get right back on track this weekend as they look for a bounceback game against Ursinus. The Bears are currently 5-4 on the season, so both teams will be looking for a big win to help keep their seasons going strong. Saturday's game will be hosted by Ursinus and is set to start at 1:00 PM.
