Westminster, Md. - The Bryn Mawr lacrosse team hit the road for the first time this season earlier on Saturday afternoon, as they faced the Green Terror of McDaniel College. Unfortunately for the Owls, the hosts proved mighty unkind in the affair as they protected their home turf with gusto in a 19-2 victory. Freshman Fiona Steele was one of the bright spots on the day for the Owls, as she extended her season-opening goalscoring streak to five games in the contest. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Alpert had a busy afternoon, making 17 saves in a valiant effort in front of the cage.
McDaniel (4-2, 1-0 Cent.) got the offense firing early, scoring five straight goals in the first five minutes to open the game. However, Bryn Mawr (2-3, 0-1 Cent.) responded through Steele for their first goal of the game. The freshman won the draw off of the previous goal and marched the ball down the field, drawing a foul in the process. After the reset, Steele continued her run into the circle and fired a shot past McDaniel keeper Lily Galzerano and into the net to get Bryn Mawr on the board.
McDaniel would go on to score six more goals in a row over the next run of play before Bryn Mawr got back on the scoreboard. With six minutes to go in the half, Steele once again gained control of a draw and the Owls moved the ball into the offensive zone. After a solid run of possession, the ball worked its way back into the stick of Steele, who wound her way into the circle and put yet another shot into the cage to make it 11-2.
Unfortunately, that would be all the offense that the Owls could find on the day. McDaniel would score the last eight goals of the game, including seven unanswered in the second half, to take the 19-2 victory. Danielle Entrot led the Green Terror with five goals on the day, while Samantha Barbeito chipped in an impressive eight assists in the game. With the loss, the Owls drop to 2-3 on the season and to 0-1 in Centennial Conference play. The team will be right back in action late next week with a run of two games in three days. That starts with another road game, this of the non-conference variety, at Bryn Athyn on Thursday evening. Then, Bryn Mawr returns to beautiful Applebee Field for their first Centennial Conference home game next Saturday at 1:00 PM as they take on Dickinson College.
