WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Bryn Mawr basketball team hit the road on Saturday to take on McDaniel College in a big Centennial Conference showdown. After a tough loss to the Green Terror earlier in January at home, the Owls were looking for some revenge today, but were unable to find what they were looking for. Despite a solid game for the Owls from several players, including a great 4-for-6 afternoon from Elizabeth Chan, it was McDaniel who completed the season sweep with a 91-30 win. Fourteen different Green Terror players scored points on the night, led by an efficient 21 points in 11 minutes of playing time from Anna Mondoro.
Bryn Mawr got the game started in the right fashion, taking a quick lead out of the gate thanks to a jumper from Halena Martin off of a great pass from Sydney Garner. McDaniel hit a three-pointer on their first possession to answer back, but Bryn Mawr immediately retook the lead after an Odinaka Oranekwu offensive rebound led to a wide open jump shot for Chan. McDaniel went on an eight point run over the next few moments to take their first lead of the game, but Bryn Mawr did a solid job of hanging around over the rest of the quarter. Oranekwu ended the rally with a layup of her own midway through the frame, and then Chan followed that up with another jumper. Laya Paladugu got on the scoresheet later in the frame, Martin hit another basket of her own, and Cleo Elizabeth-Robertson closed out the scoring in the period for Bryn Mawr with a layup in the final seconds. Ultimately Bryn Mawr trailed just 21-14 headed into the second quarter.
McDaniel bumped the pressure up coming out of that brief break, and a nine point run for the hosts gave the Green Terror a 16-point lead. Martin put a stop to that run on another jumper on off a pass from Chan, however, and later on Chan and Brendan Harrison would tally buckets on back-to-back possessions. Then, Lipi Paladugu found herself wide open outside the arc, and she was able to convert a pass from her sister into another three points for the Owls account. Bryn Mawr would score once more in the quarter on a basket from Elizabeth-Robertson, but McDaniel took a 44-25 lead to the locker room at halftime.
Unfortunately, the Owls offense was held completely in check in the second half by a stalwart McDaniel defensive effort. Bryn Mawr shot 2-for-18 from the field in the second half, with those baskets coming from Chan and Lipi Paladugu in the third quarter, while Oranekwu added a free throw in the fourth. The tough McDaniel defense also forced the Owls into 14 turnovers in the second half. Meanwhile, the Green Terror turned the ball over just twice in the entire second half, and they also shot 58 percent from the floor in the half. All in all, that added up to a 47-5 advantage for the hosts in the second half of the game, allowing McDaniel to cruise away with the 91-30 win.
Bryn Mawr will get a chance to rebound from today's tough loss right away, as the Owls will be right back in action on Monday night. Bryn Mawr will get a night off from their tough streak of Centennial Conference opponents and instead play host to Cairn in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium. Monday night will be a big game in the series between these two teams, as the Owls and the Highlanders are currently 6-6 against each other in recorded history. Game time on Monday night in Bryn Mawr is slated for 7:00 PM.
