NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Bryn Mawr basketball team opened their 2015-16 campaign earlier Saturday afternoon by taking part in the Women's College Tip-Off Tournament. The Owls took on the Gators of Notre Dame (Md.) at the College of New Rochelle in the opening game of the tournament, and though Bryn Mawr battled throughout and kept it close, the Gators ultimately hung on for a 60-50 win in the contest.
The game was tight the entire way, as the Gators led by four after the first quarter, but Bryn Mawr outscored Notre Dame 17-15 in the second to go to the half trailing by just two. However, the Gators were able to win both the third and fourth quarters to maintain their slim lead and hang on for the 60-50 win.
Freshman guard Erica Dwyer had a fantastic debut for the Owls, as she led all players in scoring in the game with 16 points. Dwyer was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line and also drained both three-pointers she attempted in her solid effort. Fellow freshman Cleo Elizabeth-Robertson also had a strong debut, putting up 12 points on 6-of-12 from the floor. Kara Breeden, Adriana Castilla-Hernandez, and Sanam Sheriff each added six points in the contest, while Veronica Roux chipped in another four.
The Owls played a very solid game, committing fewer turnovers than the Gators and shooting better from beyond the arc and from the free throw stripe. However, Notre Dame outrebounded Bryn Mawr by a wide margin, giving them too many looks at second chance points in the contest.
Bryn Mawr will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Cedar Crest in the consolation game of the tournament.
