Bryn Mawr Hangs Tough Against McDaniel

Bryn Mawr, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr basketball team came out on fire in today's matchup against visiting McDaniel College earlier Saturday afternoon. However, the Green Terror were able to overcome the early Owls onslaught to eventually take home a 91-27 victory. Freshman Sanam Sheriff stayed hot for the hosts, leading the team in scoring for the third straight game with eight points. Chantille Kennedy racked up six points of her own to go along with three steals, a block, and an assist. McDaniel was led by guard Lindsey Nichols, who poured in 19 points on an eight-for-nine effort from the field.

Bryn Mawr (0-10) faced an early deficit when the Green Terror converted a three-pointer right out of the gate, but the Owls were undeterred. After a turnover by McDaniel, Veronica Roux managed to work the ball inside and put in a layup to make it a 3-2 game. A pair of McDaniel free throws momentarily extended their lead, but Bryn Mawr quickly answered once again with a great run. Sheriff got that started with a jumper off a steal by Kennedy. Then, after another McDaniel turnover, it was Kennedy who went coast to coast for a layup, plus a foul. The two-point basket gave Bryn Mawr their first lead of the game, and after Kennedy converted the free throw, the Owls held a 7-5 advantage. Then, it was Kara Breeden's turn to wreak some havoc, making another steal and converting a layup of her own to give Bryn Mawr a 9-5 lead over the top team in the Centennial Conference.

After a quick timeout to get the momentum slowed down, McDaniel (13-1, 7-1 Cent.) finally managed to get their offense on track. Steph Perez hit a three-ball to draw the Green Terror within one, and then Perez converted a Bryn Mawr turnover into two points to give the visitors the lead. McDaniel managed to pull ahead to a 13-9 advantage, but then it was the Owls turn to respond. Bryn Mawr managed to get into their offensive set and ran a play to perfection, allowing Breeden to dive inside to the basket and convert another layup, drawing the Owls back within two.

Unfortunately, the well would dry up for the Bryn Mawr offense over the next ten minutes. McDaniel went on a 32-0 run in that period, and when Martely Carrera scored the Owls's last basket of the half, they found themselves trailing 45-13.

The Owls did make another solid run midway through the second half to try and get back in the contest. Jasmine Rangel banked in a three-ball to put the Owls on 16 points, and then Adriana Castilla-Hernandez earned a trip to the charity stripe. She managed to convert both free throws to cut into the McDaniel lead even more. Later, Sheriff hit another of her patented triples from well beyond the arc, giving the Owls 21. Then, Kennedy managed to nail another and-1 layup with a sweet cut into the paint from the left wing. Sheriff followed that up with another deep three in the final minutes to give Bryn Mawr their total of 27 on the day.

Once again, the Owls face a quick turnaround, having only Sunday off before they head to their next game. Bryn Mawr will be on the road on Monday for a 6:00 PM game at Cairn University. The Highlanders hold a 2-10 record and are in the midst of a nine-game losing streak. Be sure to come cheer on the Owls in what should be a solid game on Monday night!
