Basketball Opens Season on Road at Notre Dame

Baltimore, Md. – The Bryn Mawr basketball team opened their 2014-15 campaign earlier Saturday afternoon by taking part in the Women's College Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by Notre Dame (Maryland). The Owls took on the host Gators in the opening game of the tournament, and though the team battled hard, they took a tough 16-63 loss. Senior guard Chantille Kennedy led the Owls in scoring with five points on the day, while Veronica Roux and Tosin Ajiboye both pulled in seven rebounds to lead all players in that category.

Notre Dame (1-0, 0-0 CSAC) got out to a quick 4-0 lead in the contest, but Bryn Mawr (0-1) managed to cut their deficit on a nice drive to the basket by freshman Kara Breeden. She was able to draw a foul on the attempt, and managed to hit one of two free throws to make it a 4-1 game early on. Later, Adriana Castilla-Hernandez nailed a jumper after a great offensive rebound from Roux, making it an 11-3 game. Castilla-Hernandez found herself open for another jumper a few minutes later to make it 16-5, but Notre Dame continued to pull away from the Owls. An eight-point run made it 24-5, but Ashton Dwyer sank a free-throw and Kennedy made a jumper of her own to tack Bryn Mawr to eight points.

The Gators closed out the first half on a six-point run, and then opened the second frame by hitting back-to-back three-pointers around another made jumper to stake themselves to a 41-8 lead. Ajiboye hit a jump shot of her own with 6:18 left to play for the Owls to make it a 54-16 game, but that was as close as Bryn Mawr would get from that point on.

Roux was a force on the offensive glass for the Owls, with four of her seven rebounds coming on the offensive side of the ball, the most of any player in the game. Kara Breeden was able to dish out two assists on the day alongside Dwyer, and Ajiboye was credited with three steals in the contest. Notre Dame was led by Stephanie Roach, who scored 11 points to lead all scorers in the affair.

The Owls will head right back down to Baltimore tomorrow for the consolation game of the Tip-Off tournament, against the loser of today's game between College of New Rochelle and Cedar Crest. The game will take place at 1:00 PM.
