Parmese Leads Owls Over Notre Dame (Md.) with a Career Day

BRYN MAWR, Pa.Nicolette Parmese set a new career record with 32 points and 19 rebounds as she earned her second double-double in a s many game to lead the Owls over  Notre Dame (Md.) 48-45 in the consolation game of the 2013 Women's College Tip-Off Tournament.

The Owls pulled out the three-point victory in a true nail biter. With just over one minute to play, the game saw its sixth tie of the game, 45-45. Following a Gators' turnover, NDMU fouled Parmese to send her to the line for two shots. Parmese made both shots to give the owls the lead.

On Notre Dame's ensuing possession, a missed jumped from Kamelya Medina put the Gators in a must foul situation, once again sending Parmese to the line. After making her first shot, Parmese missed her second with 19 seconds to play. As the Gators pushed their ball into their half, Medina got a good look at the basket but as she pulled up for the three, her foot went over the line. However, it didn't matter as her shot hit off the side of the iron and careened out of bounds.

After a slow start to the game, Bryn Mawr took a 7-3 lead forcing the Gators to take a timeout. Notre Dame started to cut into their deficit as they chipped-away and pulled within one, 11-10, with 9:33 to play in the half.

Following a successful lay-up by Shaun-de Jones, the Gators took the lead and added to it as the first-half started to come to an end. Notre Dame led by as many as six down the stretch. However, a three-pointer by junior Saira Kitagawa and a lay-up from Parmese had the Owls looking at only a one-point deficit with 2:16 to play.

Back-to-back baskets from Notre Dame pushed their lead back to five, 23-18, but Parmese connected on a lay-up with seven seconds remaining in the half to pull the Owls within three, 23-20.

In the second, Notre Dame took a seven point lead, 30-24, with 15:46 left. The Owls started to bounce back as they eventually tied the game at 30-all and pushed their lead to five, 35-30 as they outscored the Gators 10-0 during a five minute span.

Notre Dame pulled within one, 37-36, before both teams traded the lead over the final five minutes. During those final five minutes, neither team held a lead of two or more until the final 19 seconds when the Owls held it by three.

The win gives the Owls their first victory of the year as well as the first "w" for interim head coach Becky Tyler. The Owls finished the Women's College Tip-Off Tournament with a 1-1 record.

Kitagawa ended the day with nine points while sophomore Veronica Roux and freshman Adriana Castilla-Hernandez added four and three points, respectively. Roux added 11 rebounds as sophomore junior Ashton Dwyer handed out five assists.

For the Gators, Medina ended the day with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Naimani Staley grabbed 17 rebounds.

The Owls are back on the hardwood when they travel to McDaniel on Saturday, Nov. 23, for a 4:00 pm showdown with the Green Terror.
