Basketball Wins Season Opener Over Notre Dame of Maryland University

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr College basketball team opened up their 2012-2013 campaign with a convincing 59-40 win over Notre Dame of Maryland University at the Cedar Crest Tip-Off Tournament.

The Owls got on the board first when junior Nicolette Parmese connected on a layup 16-seconds into the game. After taking the lead, Bryn Mawr never looked back as they cruised to their first season opener win since 2008 when the Yellow and White defeated Mount Holyoke 38-35.

Following a Parmese free throw, giving the Owls a 3-0 lead, the Gators got on the board with a jumper to pull within one, 3-2. That was the closest Notre Dame got to the Owls all afternoon.

With 10 minutes to play in the opening frame, Bryn Mawr held a 13-9 lead with four different Owls netting baskets.  Over the final five minutes of action of the first, Bryn Mawr outscored the Gators 10-6

At the half, the Owls held an 8-point, 26-18, lead. They were 31.3% from the field and 54.5% from the free throw line.

In the second-half, Bryn Mawr continued to dominate the Gator as they outscored them 33-22. The Owls took their largest lead of the game, 54-27 (27 points), with 4:53 to play in the game. During the final minutes 4:34 of the game, the Gators started to claw into their deficit as they outscored Bryn Mawr 13-5 but time expired giving the Owls the 19-point victory.

Leading the Owls with a game-high 21 points was Parmese. She added 13 rebounds. Freshman Hope McMahan picked-up her first career double-double with 17 rebounds and 13 points. McMahan came alive in the second-half as she grabbed 12 rebounds and tallied seven points in the final 20 minutes of action. Classmate Ashlee Williams ended the day with 15 points.

The Owls out rebounded the Gators 32-58. They ended the game by shooting 36.7% from the field and 68.2% from the free throw line.

The win snaps a 58-game losing streak for the Owls that spanned two and a half seasons. Their last win was registered on Jan. 19, 2012, when Bryn Mawr defeated PSU-Brandywine 63-52.

The Owls are back to action tomorrow when they take on Wilson College at 3:00 pm in the Championship Game of the tournament.
