PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr rowing team hit the water earlier Saturday for the first regatta of the 2019-2020 academic year. The team got their non-traditional season underway by participating in the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River, and the Owls definitely made some noise. The Owls placed first and third out of all the Division III crews in the Women's Open/Collegiate 4+ event, a tremendous start to their year.
Bryn Mawr's first boat across in that event was coxed by Samantha Van Cott, with Sovigne Gardner in the stroke seat. Madison Barchas, Camryn Teranes, and Trinity Dillard rounded out the rest of that boat, and the Owls came across in a time of 16:30. That was good enough for 24th place overall out of 38 boats in the event, and it was the top time of any Division III team in action. Their teammates came across just a few positions back in 30th. The Owls' second boat was coxed by Abigail Harris and consisted of Jacqueline Fernandez, Emily Rho, Sophia McConnell, and Aurielle Hampton, and they were the third-fastest D-III boat behind Stockton's "A" boat.
The Owls also featured a boat in the Women's Open/Collegiate 8+ event. That boat finished in 24th place as well, crossing the line in a time of 15:24. That was good enough to beat out teams from Stockton, St. Mary's, Susquehanna, and Merchant Marine Academy, among others.
Bryn Mawr will be back in the water next weekend for the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
