BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The accolades just keep coming for Owls rowers this summer. Bryn Mawr senior Jane Liu and junior Emily Spiegel have been named to the 2017 Philadelphia Inquirer Women's Rowing Academic All-Area team. The team is chosen by the Philadelphia metropolitan area's 28 sports information directors.
Liu was dominant for the Owls all season, typically holding down the six seat in Bryn Mawr's historic varsity eight boat. A May graduate, Liu majored in Biology. Spiegel was just as important for the Owls, sitting right ahead of Liu in the seven seat in the varsity eight. Spiegel will return to the team as a senior next year as she completes her degree in Biology as well.
The duo was a big part of the Owls eight which won Bryn Mawr's first ever gold medal at a regatta and earned the school's first ever national ranking in a coaches poll. They were also both named to the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference Academic All-Conference Team this season as well.
In order to be eligible for the Academic All-Area team, an athlete must be in at least her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. Liu and Spiegel become the first Owls named to any Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team since Vanessa Felso of the crew team in 2015.
Liu and Spiegel join Drexel's Catherine Haas and Paige Propp, Temple's Lea Millio, Penn's Natalie Reynolds and Regina Salmons, and Saint Joseph's Katherine Robb and Caroline Strauss on the Academic All-Area team. Propp and Reynolds were named Co-Performers of the Year.
