CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Bryn Mawr crew team got some historic representation at the Head of the Charles regatta earlier Sunday afternoon. The Owls' Varsity Four boat, consisting of Ji Yoon Ahn, Emily Spiegel, Jane Liu, and Jill Li and coxed by Anna Ferlanti, tied for the best-ever finish for Bryn Mawr at the event by taking eighth place overall out of 35 teams. The Owls put up a solid time of 21:53 on the day, and in a field full of teams from across all the NCAA Divisions, Bryn Mawr perhaps put on the most impressive showing by claiming a spot in the top ten.
On a day that featured some very difficult race conditions on the course, including 15 mile per hour headwinds and even whitecaps at times, the Owls buckled down and put on a gritty performance from start to finish. Starting from the 21st spot, Bryn Mawr demonstrated some incredible strength and endurance, while cox Anna Ferlanti took as many inside lanes she could through the bends in the river. That helped the Owls pass by four boats and steam ahead to finish eighth with that very impressive sub 22-minute time. Bryn Mawr was one of the highest-finishing D-III boats on the day, and they also beat out dozens of D-I teams, including Clemson, Cincinnati, and Oregon. For a more local reference, Bryn Mawr topped local Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference rival Franklin & Marshall by almost 30 seconds!
The Owls will look to build upon their impressive performance today when they get right back in action next week. Bryn Mawr will travel straight back up north to Smith College, who will host this year's Seven Sisters Championship on Sunday.
