Philadelphia, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr rowing team posted a tremendous slate of finishes at the first day of the nationally-renowned Dad Vail Regatta earlier Friday afternoon. After a victory in the repechage race, the Owls 8 led by captain Vanessa Felso will be headed into the second day of the competition to face off in the Varsity Eight DIII Final.
Bryn Mawr opened the day with two eights in action, with both competing in the same heat. The two Owls boats went up against two boats from Rochester to start the regatta in the second DIII heat. Although both Bryn Mawr teams put up fierce battles, the Owls were forced to take third and fourth in the heat. Felso's team of eight put up a solid time of 7:31.50 to earn the third-place spot, just ten seconds back of the second Rochester boat. Meanwhile, the second eight led by freshman Courtney Given put up a good time themselves, coming home in 8:33.73.
With those finishes, both boats were moved into the repechage, which took place late this afternoon. Facing off against one of the Rochester teams again, as well as crews from St. John Fisher and Marietta, the Owls again made great strides in the water. This time, Felso's boat of eight took home first place in the event, completing the race in a time of 7:38.02. That was more than enough to advance that eight into tomorrow's final. Meanwhile, the other Bryn Mawr eight finished just outside of a spot that would've advanced them as well, but they were still able to shave off almost ten seconds from their time earlier in the day, this time completing the race in 8:24.69.
Tomorrow's Varsity Eight DIII Final is slated to take place at 4:13 in the afternoon, and is one of the last events in the entire regatta. The Owls will face some stiff competition; joining Bryn Mawr in the regatta will be teams from St. John Fisher, two boats from Rochester, and two more from Marietta. Bryn Mawr will look to make some history in what will be their final race of the 2014-15 season tomorrow.
