Field Hockey Falls in Championship Game 5-1 to Drew University

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Playing in the Championship Game of the Bryn Mawr College Field Hockey Tournament for the second straight year, the 2013 edition didn't fare well for the Owls as Drew University topped Bryn Mawr 5-1.

Bryn Mawr fell behind early as it took Drew less than six minutes to net the game's first tally. Brooke Gagliano took a Melissa Boyd pass and beat senior goalie Faith Westdorp to her left to give the Rangers the 1-0 lead.

Drew added back-to-back goals from Sam Barcia and Danielle Waleko to push their lead to 3-0 with twenty minutes to play in the half.

The Owls got on the board when junior Ashley Arbuckle screened Rangers' Goalie CC Carlini as Bryn Mawr brought the ball into the circle. After a shot by sophomore Kayla Bixler, Arbuckle took the loose ball and passed it to junior Madison Beckmann, who was on the far side of the net, before stoking the ball into the back of the cage. The goal was Beckmann's first of the season.

Barcia added another goal for Drew less than four minutes later to give the Rangers a 4-1 lead at the half.

In the second, Gagliano scored with help from Waleko and Boyd on Penalty corner.

For the Owls, Westdorp posted 10 saves while sophomore Alex Weinfeld turned away seven shots in the second-half. Beckmann, Bixler and junior Holly Constants each recorded shots on the day.

Bryn Mawr returns to action when they host Immaculata University on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 4:00 pm on Applebee Field.
