LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Bryn Mawr College field hockey team started the 2012 season with a convincing 7-0 win over Rivier (N.H.) Saturday afternoon at the Thayer Classic hosted by Sweet Briar College.
It didn't take long for the Owls get on the board. Sophomore Ashley Arbuckle picked-up her first collegiate goal in the 4th minute of the game when she took a pass from classmate Mikah Farbo on a penalty corner. Bryn Mawr added another goal just over a minute later when sophomore Madison Beckmann tallied her first goal of the season when she scored on an own rebound shot at 5:36.
Freshman Kayla Bixler joined in on the scoring parade when she fired a shot from the top right of the circle sending the ball past Rivier's goalie Makenzie Flagg. The Owls added another goal in the 13th minute when Beckmann notched her second goal of the game following a loose-ball scrum in front of the net. Sophomore Holly Constants was credited with the assist. Bryn Mawr held on to take the 4-0 lead at the half.
In the second-half, the Owls found the back of the cage three times in less than a 10-minute span. Senior co-captain Isidora Armentrout netted her first goal of the season when she found nothing but back of the cage via a penalty corner in the 46th minute.
Beckmann added her third tally of the game in the 52nd minute when she gained possession of the play and sped through the Rivier defense from 35 yards out and fired her shot past Flagg. This is Beckmann's second game with a hat trick in her young intercollegiate career. Her first hat trick came in last season's finale against Cedar Crest where she recorded all four of Bryn Mawr's goals.
Six minutes later, Bixler added her second goal of the game when she took a penalty corner pass from the top of the circle as drove in for the goal.
The Owls peppered Flagg all afternoon by posting 40 shots with 25 of them being on goal. Bryn Mawr held Rivier to only six shots and two penalty corners on the afternoon.
This win marks the first time since 2006 that the Owls have opened-up a season with a win. Back in 2006, the Owls defeated Mary Baldwin 4-0 at the MBC Invitational.
Bryn Mawr is back to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on the host Vixens at 2:00 pm. Sweet Briar fell to Cedar Crest, 7-2, earlier in the day.
