Gearing-Up Cycle-A-Thon A Success

The Bryn Mawr College Fit Club hosted a Cycle-A-thon to benefit Gearing-Up, a Philadelphia based non-profit that provides women in transition from abuse, addiction, and/or incarceration with the skills, equipment, and guidance to safely ride a bicycle for exercise, transportation, and personal growth.

This years’ event was in conjunction with April Fitness and the Fit Club’s Challenge. The co-founders of Gearing Up, Kristin Gavin and Megan Donascimento, were thoroughly impressed with the community involvement and enthusiasm! In the end, the Bryn Mawr College community raised $2797.90.

“As the Athletic Department takes on more service initiatives, it was wonderful have such outstanding support from the BMC community in donations, raffle ticket sales and participation in the Cycle-a-thon. Because of its great success, we hope to make this an annual event and Gearing Up is a fantastic organization that we hope to support again in the future,” stated co-organizer Laura Kemper.

With 84 participants on 14 teams, made up of Faculty, staff and students (undergrad and postbacs), the event ran from 8:00 am-2:00 pm.

The top fundraising team, Team Patriot, comprised of Wendy Greenfield, Laura Kemper, Liz McCormack, Terry McLaughlin, Kathy Tierney and Tatyana Welch raised more than $800 and finished third overall in total mileage.
